\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tThe foundations of pediatric vertebrology and traumatology-orthopedics as specialties within pediatric surgery in the Republic of Moldova were laid by Prof. N. C. Gheorghiu. The formation and development of pediatric vertebrology and traumatology-orthopedics had a truly international character and evolved under the influence of prominent pediatric orthopedic surgeons and pediatric surgeons from the Soviet Union: Prof. Z. Shneiderov (Kyiv), M. V. Volkov (Moscow), M. L. Dmitriev (Odesa), G. A. Bairov (Leningrad), V. D. Dedov (Moscow, CITO), A. I. Kazmin (Moscow, CITO), and Yu. Pozdnikin (Turner Pediatric Orthopedic Institute, Leningrad). Many of them visited the clinic, provided consultations, performed demonstration surgeries, and delivered lectures to medical students and physicians. The future orthopedic specialists of the Pediatric Surgery Clinic in the Republic of Moldova received training at their scientific centers and medical institutions.\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tIn 1973, an orthopedic and traumatology department was established at the Center for Pediatric Surgery, where children with spinal pathologies were referred. At the same time, Prof. N. K. Gheorghiu began preparing the department assistant, Candidate of Medical Sciences and pediatric surgeon N. G. Shavga, for the position of head of the vertebrology clinic. In the field of pediatric vertebrology, he underwent training at CITO (Moscow) in the clinics of Prof. V. D. Dedov and Prof. A. I. Kazmin, as well as in the vertebrology department of the Turner Institute of Pediatric Orthopedics under Prof. Yu. Pozdnikin.\nThe first surgery for scoliosis, performed on a 15-year-old girl, was carried out in 1975 by Associate Professor N. G. Shavga. After the \u201cwedge vertebra excision\u201d surgery performed by Academician G. A. Bairov in Chi\u0219in\u0103u (1985), the Pediatric Surgery Clinic began implementing surgical interventions for congenital scoliosis.\nOver the following 35 years, the clinic not only progressed from using Kazmin, Rodnyansky, and Harrington endocorrectors to modern polysegmental Cotrel\u2013Dubousset systems, but also, drawing on its own experience, developed proprietary corrective metal implants, conservative treatment methods, and surgical techniques that have no analogues worldwide \u2014 as evidenced by 17 patents granted in the Republic of Moldova.\nCurrently, the clinic performs a wide range of spinal surgeries for deformities, dysplastic-degenerative conditions, and injuries, as well as surgical treatments for congenital and acquired diseases of the musculoskeletal system.\nDespite the demanding daily work at the Clinic, the staff continue to improve their practical skills and expand their scientific collaborations with international colleagues. Recently, Associate Professor N. N. Shavga has completed international training programs at several world-renowned medical centers, including: the M. I. Sitenko Institute of Spine and Joint Pathology of the Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine (KhNII\u0422\u041e, Kharkiv), the N. N. Priorov Central Institute of Traumatology and Orthopedics (CITO, Moscow), Belarusian State Medical University (Minsk), the Federal Agency for High-Tech Medical Care \u201cReconstructive Traumatology and Orthopedics named after Academician G. A. Ilizarov\u201d (Kurgan, Russia), the Open Medical Institute \u2013 Bone & Joint Surgery Program (Weill Cornell Clinic, Salzburg), and the Spinal Surgery Seminar (Austria).
